si tapper dan kajiannya #psychostudy

Bismillah

I was about to sleep just now, when i suddenly felt so guilty for not revising enough.

but to be honest i'm not in the mood of studying. so i figure out a brilliant idea. to disguise my revision with something fun and less tedious. i'm updating my blog on a topic called psychology.

so you might not want to continue ur reading coz this is just me doing my psycho revision, unless of course if you want to add up to your general knowledge hihi

i'm trying to fake my excitement.

***
This is mainly about one of the few branches in Health Psychology namely, Health Promotion.

So, i will go through the first case study by Tapper.
Basically, she (yup, i thought it was a guy too btw) carried out a study to provide better alternatives in promoting health other than just providing information alone. Because according to her -also supported but the statistics, providing information alone is not enough to change certain behaviour. this experiment focused largely on healthy eating. so, having known that providing information about eating healthy to parents and children has not resulted in children pursuing health diets at school, Tapper decided to use a different approach.

i personally think that it is beneficial to know about this since one of the parenting skill that you might want to possess is, the capability to nurture your children with a healthy lifestyle. this is a good start.keep reading.

Three main ideas that had been used by Tapper were:
1. Modelling
2. Rewards
3. Taste Exposure

let's go through this together..

Modelling
This ain't nothing to do with runway or snap shot of gorgie models. it involves the use of Social Learning Theory (SLT) -as in Bandura exp. Children observe characters obtaining rewards for eating healthily and can identify with those characters- and so learn to eat healthy foods.
So, becoming a mum / dad one day, be a good role model.  you want them to eat healthily.serve the right food.don't be like a ketam showing it's kiddos how to walk  jangan jadi seperti ketam mengajar anak berjalan. ecece

Rewards
This one is actually based on the operant conditioning . It involves the giving of pens for eating healthily and stickers to wear. It is discussed further here, that is is much better to give these children positive reinforcement rather than negative ones. lemme show you. for example, we often heard this old trick used by parents to their children ; "You can't eat your nice pudding until you have eaten your vegetables". It suggests that what has to be eaten to gain the reward is unpleasant, and this, simply encourages the eating of the unhealthy, fattening pudding than the healthy vegetables itself.
hmm interesting. so next time. never use the old ways of encouraging children to eat veggies. It may works but not only to make them eat the vegetable but also to love the  pudding more-or anything as such. u get me, rite?

Taste Exposure
This one is based on the idea that the more you taste a new food, the more you will grow to come to like it. Let us put it this way. A lot of food we did not like as children, we grow up liking them when we are adults because we have come to like them after repeated tasting. e.g exotic fruits.
hmm i don't know how far is this true. coz if i dont like it, then i don't like it. :p

So, I'm done talking bout the concept applied by Tapper in this experiment.

experiment background

a PILOT STUDY was carried out in the home environment with a small group of 5-6 years old children  (identified by their parents as 'fussy-eaters') who ate few fruit and vegetables.
sila pay attention, this is how you deal with fussy-eaters!

specific ways done by Tapper to apply the three concepts are:
Modeling- She used video presentation whereby the 'Cood Dudes', slightly older than themselves were shown to be benefiting from eating healthy foods (gaining extra power)- and winning battles against the 'Junk Punks' (junk food eaters).
The rewards and Taste Exposure- Children were given items such as Food Dude stickers, pens and erasers each time they ate(taste)fruit and vegetables.

Result :

this study resulted in a significant increases in the amount of fruit and vegetables eaten by children. yeayy
so, you can try this at home.

NEXT, it does not end here. coz Tapper probably thought that the result need to supported to be more convincing. thus, another follow up (large scale)experiment to investigate the efficacy of these approaches were soon carried out. it's the FULL EXPERIMENT (td kan pilot je)

It was a field experiment. the set ups are school environment using 3 different schools in different locations in the UK (North wales, Manchester and Oxfordshire). The children were aged 4-11.One school as control group not receiving any of the programme.

The programme lasted for a period of 16 days during which...
Modelling- children watched the Food Dude video episodes
Rewars- Children received rewards when they eat fruits and Vegetables presented to them
Taste Exposure- They receive a Food Dude sticker reward for tasting food.

Result:
also...

large statistically significant increase in fruits and vegetables consumption in two of the schools-both at snack-time and lunchtime. The increase occured for both gilrs and boys in infant(4-7 y/o) and junior (7-11y/o) classes but the control school experienced no change. This suggest that the programme was making a significant difference.

Conclusion :

It works !

That's about it. but of course. we need to go in depth about the approaches and the evaluation behind this. There's some more to write.. belek2 kertas nota. mak aihhh panjang lagi!

and i could't care less to do a spell check. kamon grammar nazis :0

but i'm starting to regret thiz fabulous idea of fun revision coz i drooping every now and then. so long people.
goodnight. sleep tight! :)
